|Course Description||Micro-organisms with emphasis on those of medical significance and problems of personal and community health.|
|Course Prerequisites||Biology 2401 & 2402 Anatomy and Physiology|
|Required Textbooks||Microbiology Principles and Explorations, 7th edition, J. G. Black, John Wiley and Sons, Publisher. Laboratory Methods and Materials.|
|Learning Objectives||Students will become familiar with a spectrum of organisms discernable only, using microscophy. Emphasis will be placed on the organism's natural history ,their impact on humans,their treatment, and their relationship to modern healthcare. Students will become familiar with microbiological methods and materials in the laboratory. Students will learn and demonstate an understanding of bacterial morphology, bacterial identification, and bacterial culture using aseptic technique in the laboratory. Students will learn and demonstrate an understanding of the concept of "sterility." Students will become familiar with the following groups: Viruses, prions, protozoans, fungi, and helminths as they impact modern healthcare.|
Lecture: There will be three lecture tests and a final examination. All tests are mandatory. Students will be given the option of completing a number of disease reports to substitue for their lowest grade. The disease reports will not replace a "zero."
Laboratory: There will be three laboratory tests. All tests are mandatory.

|Attendance Policy||Lecture and Laboratory: Attendance is mandatory. On the third absence, (Lecture, Lab, or combined) the instructor reserves the right to generate an "Instructor Initiated Drop."|

Lecture Tests (Three tests plus the final examination) = 75%
Laboratory (Three tests) = 25%
