Course TitleBusiness Principles
Course Description Survey course emphasizing interaction of business with its external and internal environments. Introduction to public policy process and issues with focus on ethical and moral consideration. Recommended for freshman, especially business majors.
Course Prerequisites Basic skills competency in reading required, ready access to a computer, basic computer skills, Internet access with e-mail, e-mail skills, Internet navigation skills, file management skills. Software: Windows 95, Word 97, Excel 97, Access 97, and PowerPoint 97 (or newer).

Learning Objectives At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:

•Define Business, discuss the history of business, and recognize the changing global marketplace Explain what economic principles are and how they are derived.

•Explain what business ethics is and define social responsibility locally and globally

•Distinguish between micro and macroeconomics and demonstrate a knowledge of economic theory

•Identify why nations trade, list barriers to international trade and discuss strategies to overcome these barriers

•Be able to discuss in detail the advantages and disadvantages of small business, franchising, and identify the various forms of business

•Be able to discuss in detail entrepreneurship, list the reasons for entrepreneurship, and identify the characteristics of entrepreneurs

•Define management, list the skills needed to manage, and detail methods of improving these skills, and analyze the difference between centralized an decentralized organizations

•Identify the aspects of human resource management, and list and define the functions of human resource management

•Explain teamwork and the characteristics of teams

•Distinguish between labor and management and explain the history and legislation behind union and management relations

•Define marketing, discuss the evolution of marketing, and describe buyer behavior and market segmentation

•Describe a product, discuss the product life cycle, list and define branding, labeling, packaging, and pricing

•Differentiate between retailers and wholesalers and list the functions of each

•Identify the trends in technology and state how technology will aid communication, selling, and information management.

•Explain business accounting and demonstrate knowledge to financial statements and ratios, the characteristics and functions of money, and how the U.S. financial system and markets operates

Discussion Topics Assignments are due when specified by the instructor. If you miss a daily or homework assignment, you will be given a grade of 0 for that assignment.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success Students are expected to read assignments, answer objectives, use on-line resources, participate in on-line chat discussions and complete other learning activities assigned by the instructor in order to achieve course objectives. Quizzes, exams and assignments will be made available for selective release to the student learner at specific times and for limited durations. Students who fail to observe course time constraints will be penalized. Under special circumstances, make-up opportunities will be given.
Determination of Final Grade Quizzes                 35% Assignments         35% Participation                10% Mid Term                 10% Final Exam                10% Each student will have the opportunity to earn 3% of extra credit, which can be used to supplement their total possible score. Extra credit projects and activities will be assigned throughout the semester. Students, who elect to participate, will have the opportunity to pick from among several various assignments.

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
