Course Description Principles and techniques of written, expository and persuasive composition; analysis of literary, expository and persuasive texts; and critical thinking. Research paper required.

Learning Objectives

COURSE OBJECTIVES:        English 1302 is a writing course based on great works of literature in at least two genres. At the end of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

•        Analyze and interpret the subject matter of literature from several genres

•        Produce clear, correct, and coherent prose based on readings of literature

•        Use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

•        Communicate orally in class participation and in small group presentations

•        Demonstrate awareness of scope and variety of works in the arts or humanities

•        Understand those works as an expression of individual and human values within an historical and social context

•        Respond critically to works in literature

•        Comprehend the physical and intellectual demands required of the author or visual performing artist

•        Articulate an informed personal reaction to works in the arts and humanities

Major Assignments COURSE REQUIREMENTS

•        Four writing assignments

•        One research paper

•        Daily quizzes and writing assignments

•        Mid Term and Final Exam

No late papers. If missed, the mid term must be made up within two days of returning to class. It will not be the same test as taken by the class.

Discussion Topics Literature
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. A student with three absences may be dropped from class.

Determination of Final Grade SEMESTER GRADE

•        30% four writing assignment

•        25% research paper

•        15% daily grades

•        30% 2 tests

Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated.  Please consult the student handbook for consequences of academic dishonesty.  These policies will be strictly enforced.

 

 Facility  Policies

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
