Course TitleAmerican History- History of the United States, 1877 to Present
Course Description Survey of United States history from the post-reconstruction period to the present.
Course Prerequisites None.
Required Textbooks Brinkley, Alan. AMERICAN HISTORY, A Survey. Volume II. McGraw-Hill Publishing
Learning Objectives The student will be able to:

1. relate the events that led to the conquest of the frontier and the demise of the indigenous populations

2. identify the steps the country took to reach industrial supremacy and the problems resulting from that position

3. describe the effects of rapid urban growth on American society

4. analyze the impact of industrialization on workers, immigrants, farmers and business owners in the late 19th century

5. discuss why and how the U.S. became an imperial power

6. learn the causes of the Great Depression and the measures enacted to aid the economy

7. discuss the collision of governments as the U.S. foreign policy directly began to involve us in global commitments and conflicts

8. chronicle the stages of American cultural movements and politics after the world wars

9. understand the dissolution of the communistic bloc nations and the necessity for the U.S. to reevaluate its role in the world

10. understand the emergence of a global economy, the technological revolution that made it happen, and the role the U.S. must play in these developments (if we are to continue to have a life as we know today)

11. discuss the troublesome issues of cultural diversity, drugs, HIV, homelessness, women's rights, equal rights, environmental problems as they affect our nation

12. analyze information presented and express ideas verbally and in written form

Discussion Topics Subject to current events and student questions.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students are required to attend class at all scheduled class times. An attendance role is kept.*
Determination of Final Grade Exam 1 - 100 points

Final Exam - 100 points (not comprehensive)

Reading 1 - 25 points

*Attendance - 100 points (for every absence exceeding 2 absences, 5 points are deducted)

 Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated.  Please consult the student handbook for consequences of academic dishonesty.  These policies will be strictly enforced.

 

 Facility  Policies

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
