Course TitleMasterworks of British Literature
Course Description Critical study of six to ten major works of British literature, including writersfrom most of the important periods.
Course Prerequisites This course assumes a basic mastery of composition and standard American English grammar, usage, and mechanics, which must be adhered to in all assignments.
Required Textbooks The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Major Authors, 8th edition
Learning Objectives To demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities. To understand those works as expressions of individual and human values within an historical and social context. To respond critically to works in the arts and humanities. To engage in the creative process or interpretive performance and comprehend the physical and intellectual demands required of the author or performing artist. To articulate an informed personal reaction to works in the arts and humanities. To develop an appreciation for the aesthetic principles that guide or govern the arts and humanities. To demonstrate knowledge of the influence of literature, philosophy, and/or the arts on intercultural experiences.
Major Assignments Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Chaucer collection, Othello, An Essay on Man, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Eve of St. Agnes, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Heart of Darkness, A Room of One's Own, Why the Novel Matters, Dylan Thomas poems
Discussion Topics Key facts of each piece: author, setting, when and where written, language, protagonists and antagonists, major conflicts and resolutions. In-depth discussion of plot, themes, symbols, and relevancy.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. A student with four absences, which is two full weeks of missing class, should drop. Instructor will not initiate drop, student must do so.
Determination of Final Grade Response papers and reading tests count equally, over as many pieces as we can possibly cover. The comprehensive final counts twice.

 Facility  Policies

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
