Course TitlePiano Class Inst I
Course Description Classroom instruction in keyboard technique fundamentals for students with limited or no piano background. Includes sight reading and selections from solo literature. Open to non-music majors.
Course Prerequisites None.
Required Textbooks Faber, N. & R., Adult Piano Adventures: A Comprehensive Piano Course - Lesson Book 1, The FJH Music Company Inc., 2001.
Learning Objectives Practicing and mastering various pianos exercises and techniques that will lead to beginner-level piano abilities and understanding.
Major Assignments Classroom assignments from playbook, and midterm and final pieces assigned according to ability.
Discussion Topics Music sight-reading, parts of piano, fingering, musicality, dynamics, performance techniques.
Attendance Policy You get one "free" absence before your lates/absences start to count against your grade in the Attendance category. After that, each absence deducts 5%. Three lates = one absence. No exceptions. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class, a record will be kept, and you will be updated at midterm regarding your progress in this area.

Breakdown:

1 absence = 100%

2 absences = 95%

3 absences = 90%

etc. (remember, 3 late arrivals to class (or early departures) equals one absence)

Determination of Final Grade Grading is based on technique, progress, attendance, attitude, prepared-ness, effort, completion of assigned materials, and musical accuracy. There will be a mid-semester evaluation where each student will receive feedback. These evaluations will reflect the relative progress and student grade of each student as of mid-term. These are vital to ensure the most positive and productive outcome for the student.

Final grades will be a breakdown of: 25% Attendance, 25% Class work, 25% Midterm, and 25% Final.

Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated.  Please consult the student handbook for consequences of academic dishonesty.  These policies will be strictly enforced.

 

 Facility  Policies

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
