Course Description Introduction to the profession of nursing, including the registered nurse¡¦s role with emphasis on health promotion and primary disease prevention across the lifespan; essential components of the nursing health assessment; identification of deviations from expected health patterns; the application of a systemic, problem-solving process to provide basic nursing care to diverse clients across the lifespan; and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. The course is designed for licenced vocational/practical nurses who seek an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing in the first semester of the Upward Mobility Nursing Program. The course presents major

concepts basic to the curriculum and organizing framework to assure orientation to nursing as a professional endeavor. The attitudes, knowledge and skills of a registered nurse are emphasized, thereby facilitating the transition from LVN/LPN to Registered Nurse. Using an integrated approach and building on the foundation of fundamental knowledge and skills the LVN/LPN already has, the concepts of stress

adaptation, human needs, therapeutic communication, growth and development through the life cycle, safety and wellness/illness are explored for people of all age groups. Theoretical content is implemented in a clinical environment.

Co-requisite: RNSG 1260

Course Prerequisites The student must be admitted to the Upward Mobility Nursing Program and have completed RNSG 1300 Health Assessment across the Lifespan and RNSG 1311 Nursing Pathophysiology.

Readings and resources will be assigned throughout the modules. Some of these resources will be available through Gate¡¦s Memorial Library¡¦s electronic reserves. Others will be Internet resources available through links in the course.

Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

„h Differentiate between roles and functions of the Licensed Vocational Nurse and the Registered

Nurse in a variety of health care settings.

„h Compare the different legal and ethical responsibilities of the Licensed Vocational Nurse and the

Registered Nurse, including the Nursing Practice Act.

„h Apply the nursing process in planning comprehensive care for multicultural clients and their families

with basic healthcare needs.

„h Explore one's own personal philosophy of nursing.

„h Apply principles of critical thinking and decision making when providing nursing care for clients who

have common health problems.

„h Discuss the importance of collaborative behavior as a member of the health care team.

„h Describe the teaching /learning process and its role in the nurse/client relationship.

„h Discuss principles of health promotion for diverse clients across the life span.

„h Apply therapeutic communication skills to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

Major Assignments Assignments

Reading Assignments and Skimming Assignments: When asked to read a text, an article or some

other resource, the student should look carefully at the material so as to understand the meaning of

what is being presented. For example, if you are asked to read a chapter in the textbook, you are

expected to know and to at least begin to understand the information being presented by the time you

complete the reading.

In comparison, skimming consists of familiarizing yourself with the materials being covered. When

asked to skim materials, it is a good practice to read the first and last sentences of the paragraphs

within the text. If you do not get the gist of the passage, read more. The student should also pay

attention to titles, headings, images and tables so to become familiar with the basic ideas presented.

RN Supervisor: In this assignment, you will play the role of an evening supervisor at a 50-bed longterm

care facility and discuss your legal responsibilities and roles. There are two units in this long-term

care facility. One unit is designated for clients who have Alzheimer¡¦s disease. Each unit is staffed with

one LVN, one medication aide, and three CNAs to provide basic care to the clients. This assignment is

worth 100 points.

Community Intervention: In this assignment, you will review a Web site and develop a communitybased

intervention plan which the RN could coordinate and implement. This assignment is worth 100


Plan of Care: In this assignment, you will watch a movie and develop a nursing plan of care for a

character in the movie. This assignment is worth 100 points.

Understanding Your Client: In this assignment, you will use the movie you watched in Module 3 to

help understand your client using Erikson¡¦s Eight Stages of Man and Maslow¡¦s Hierarchy of Needs.

This assignment is worth 100 points.

Exams: You will complete two electronic exams during the course. The midterm exam is worth 100 points and the final exam is worth 100 points. The due dates for completion of the exams are listed in the module. Exams are multiple choice, short answer and true/false. No essay questions are included.

Questions for the quizzes will be randomly selected so no two students have the same test. Each test item is of equal weight, so no student has an easier or more difficult test to take. Exam dates and times are nonnegotiable. If an exam is missed the numerical grade attained on the Comprehensive Final Exam will be substituted for the missed exam.

Individual Discussion Postings: Discussion amongst and between classmates is a major component of this course. At several points in this course, you will be asked to respond to a provocation from the instructor. Your response should consist of complete sentences and should be meet the requirements listed in each discussion assignment instructions. Additionally, you are required to post thoughtful and scholarly responses to other student postings each week.

Discussion Topics There are five (5) modules in this course. Each module represents one week of activity.

5. Collaborative Behavior and Therapeutic Communication

Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. A student who is absent for 3 days may be dropped from the program by the program director. Attendance and participation in all asynchronous discussions is expected and demonstrates professional behavior and accountability. It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any absence.
Determination of Final Grade Successful completion of the course requires the student to complete the readings, view the videos, interact in the online discussions, complete the required assignments, and participate in course

activities. Questions and disagreements concerning points/grades on assignments must be raised with the faculty member prior to the end of the course. In cases where final grades are ¡§on the borderline¡¨

between two grades, the faculty reserves the right to use the level and quality of class participation as the determination of the final grade. Students must earn a grade of at least ¡§C¡¨ to receive credit

towards the ADN degree. Any grade lower than a ¡§C¡§ will require the student to repeat the course.

All participation will be electronically monitored. Late assignments may be penalized up to 5% for every day late after the date and time due, unless prior arrangements have been made with the faculty.

Grades will be calculated using the following percentage distributions:

90 to 100% = A 75 to 79% = C 00 to 59% = F

80 to 89% = B 60 to 74% = D

Grades of incomplete are NOT automatically given when there are missing assignments at the end of the course. A student must discuss with the faculty of record for the course the reasons that an incomplete grade is being requested. This discussion must occur as soon as the student recognizes that a problem exists. Faculty members are not obligated to grant the use of an incomplete grade.

With no prior discussion of the need for an incomplete, students not completing the required activities will receive the grade for the course based on the percentage of the required material submitted.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
