|Course Description||The Learning Framework course is a study of the 1) research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation; 2) factors that impact learning; and 3) application of learning strategies. Students will use assessment instruments (learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as learners. The course helps develop skills and techniques necessary for success in college including memory development, note taking, preparing for exams, study skills and time management. It stresses the importance of creativity, health, relationships and the effective use of resources in achieving collegiate success.|
|Course Prerequisites||This course is mandated for all students on academic probation and those who have failed any Developmental Course.|
|Required Textbooks||Keys to Effective Learning, 6th ed. Carol Carter, Joyce Bishop, and Sarah Kravits, Pearson.|
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the culture of postsecondary education.
2. Be responsible for his/her college explerience and develop a personal committment to future life goals.
3. Apply college success skills and techniques to improve his/her academic success.
4. Demonstrate communication techniques that incorporate appropriate presentation, writing, listening, conversation, interviewing and discussion skills.
5. Use library resources to locate and evaluate information.
6. Describe student support services and explain how the studentmight use these services to overcome obstacles.
A chapter will be assigned each week with homework due each class day.
The three homework assignments are worth one point each with attendance and participation worth one point each. These daily assignments will total 100 points if all are completed on time. Late assignments are unacceptable.
Computer training is scheduled at the library for research techniques.
|Discussion Topics||Discussion topics include: habits for success, learning styles, time and money, setting and reaching goals, critical and creative thinking, memory, reading and studying, reading across the disciplines, active listening and note taking, test taking, and moving toward success.|
|Attendance Policy||Late work is unacceptable. You may not leave the room without permission.|
|Determination of Final Grade||Final grade is the average of two grades. One grade is the total of points based on attendance, participation and homework. Attendance is one point per day. Two late arrivals or early departures equals one absence. The other grade is the test average, one test per month, including the final exam. With the prior approval of your instructor, you may also earn extra credit for campus events. (90+ = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, 0-59 = F ) Disturbance in class is a one point deduction from the final grade, per incidence, and includes but is not limited to: cell phones ringing, text messages, talking without permission and other disrespectful behavior. Laptops may be used only with my permission or the Special Populations Coordinator|
