Course TitleClinical-Nurse Assist-Aide
Course Description A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.

Learning Objectives Lamar State College Port Arthur is determined to prepare you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in today’s dynamic work environment. Towards this end, the following workplace competencies are included in this course:

1. Acquires and evaluates information through assisting with the nursing process.

2. Communicates information to and receives input from the health care team to enhance the quality of the care provided for the clients assigned to your care.

3. Works well with children and family care givers with a variety of ethnic, social or educational backgrounds.

4. Ability to select the correct items needed to perform selected basic nursing skills

5. Demonstrate knowledge of own skills and abilities through clinical competency.

6. Identify priorities of care according to client’s current condition.

Major Assignments 9. Clinical courses are graded as S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory). A student's unsatisfactory mid-semester clinical evaluation while in the program may permit continuation (instructor discretion) in the program with continued emphasis on upgrading deficiencies. The student's unsatisfactory clinical evaluation at the end of the semester will result in a clinical course grade of "U" and prohibits further continuation in the program. Students must receive a satisfactory (S) in clinical and achieve a grade of 75 or greater to successfully complete the program, and take the skills and written state exam for nurse aide certification. If a student receives a "75" or greater in NURA 1301 and a "U" in NURA 1160 the student will receive a letter grade of "D" in NURA 1301.

10. Clinical evaluations are complete twice in semester (verbal) mid-term and a written evaluation at the end of semester. Evaluations will include student's ability to apply theory in practice, demonstrate competent client care, and maintain a professional demeanor at all times when in the clinical area. Evaluations are done by the clinical instructor with input from staff with the affiliating agency, clients, and others as appropriate.

11. Students should not attend clinical at a site in which they are employed. The student is responsible for notifying the instructor therefore arrangements can be made to attend another site.

Attendance Policy Attendance at all scheduled labs/clinicals experiences is mandatory.

***If a lab/clinical absence is unavoidable, the student must contact the instructor before 0800 on the morning of the absence and make arrangements to attend another lab/ clinical session within 3 days to maintain compliance with the State mandated hourly requirements.

2. A student who is absent from lab/clinical without notification may be withdrawn from the course.

3. It is the student's responsibilty to notify the instructor prior to any absence/ tardy from class/clinical. If the student is missing a lab/clinical, s/he must notify the faculty that s/he is unable to attend lab/clinical. If the student is unable to contact the instructor, s/he should call 984-6356 or 1-800-477-5872 ext. 6356 and leave a message. The student may also e-mail the instructor if s/he is unable to leave a voice message. DO NOT CONTACT THE FACILITY.

4. The Students first time to arrive after assigned clinical time 0800 but before 0805 will be counseled in writing. The student must remain outside of classroom until a class break is given by instructor. If the student arrives after assigned lab/clinical time 0805 on a second occasion s/he may not be allowed to remain in lab/clinical.

5. If the student is sent home for any reason s/he will be counted absent from lab/clinical and will seriously jeopardize the student's ability to meet the State mandated hourly requirements.

6. Students must be present the entire lab/clinical day to get credit for their attendance. To meet clinical objectives and maintain the maximum experience from clinical rotations provided, the student is expected to be present at each clinical day. However, if you are truly sick, please do not come to clinical. Students cannot meet the objectives of the Nurse Assistant Program without attending clinical.

7. (Mini & Summer students) Because of the abbreviated time frame in a mini-session and summer session, students cannot meet the objectives of the Nurse Assistant Program without attending clinical. Students who miss clinical hours for any reason will receive an "Unsatisfactory" for the clinical portion of the course and will be dropped from NURA 1301/1160 for failure to meet the program requirements mandated by the State of Texas Nurse Assistant program.

8. (Fall and Spring Semester students): Following the first lab/clinical absence, the student is required to make-up the lab/clinical hours within 3 days of the absence in the lab/clinical setting. Make-up hours will be scheduled per the instructor. After the second absence, the instructor will consult with the Program Director to determine if the student's performance and hourly requirements by the State of Texas Nurse Assistant Program have been met. If these requirements are determined to be unmet, the student will be dropped from the course.

9.Any student who is "NO CALL, NO SHOW" for lab/clinical demonstrates a lack of accountability and unprofessional conduct. Therefore, s/he fails clinical and didactic courses for the semester.

***The only possible exception is if a student is critically injured in a motor vehicle accident on the way to clinical and is physically unable to call the instructor as directed in # 3, #4.

Determination of Final Grade System of Grading: LAB

1. A satisfactory (S) is mandatory for each scheduled lab session.

2. The student is expected to treat each scheduled lab session as a learning tool, be present, prepared with necessary supplies, and on time. The student will practice and demonstrate proficiency in the stimulated setting all selected skills and attend assigned labs fully prepared and knowledgeable to those skills.

3. The student will perform all selected "check-off" skills, while being observed by the lab instructor with minimal instructor assistance.

4. The student is responsible for viewing videos (if applicable) prior to check-off time and coming to the check-off with appropriate equipment and partner (if applicable).

5. If a student fails to receive a satisfactory (S) on a selected skills, the student may reschedule, at the instructor's convenience, one (1) make-up. The student is responsible for contacting the instructor. The student must be successfully checked-off on all selected skills prior to attending clinical.

 Facility  Policies

        No food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

        Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom.

        Cell phones and/or pagers are allowed ONLY on vibrate mode. Leaving the classroom to answer a page or phone call may constitute an absence or a tardy.
