Business and Technology
Students in the Cosmetology Program at Lamar State College-Port Arthur can earn a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Cosmetology Operator or Cosmetology Instructor, or a one-year certificate of completion in Cosmetology Operator, Cosmetology Instructor, or Esthetics.
Graduates will accrue the required number of clock hours in training and will have the knowledge and skills needed to pass the Texas cosmetology licensing examination.
The A.A.S. degree is designed to prepare students to operate and manage a professional salon. In addition to cosmetology classes, students also are required to complete coursework in accounting, introduction to computers, payroll and business tax accounting, and other academic courses in order to be prepared for the complexities of small business management or ownership. Students also will accumulate 1,500 clock hours of hands-on experience, as required for licensing in Texas.
The Esthetician specialty track prepares students to perform all aspects of skin care and makeup. The track is intended to meet the needs of students who want to enter the industry in a minimum amount of time while accumulating the clock hours of experience required for licensing.
Students will receive training in the LSC-PA Cosmetology Center, a state-of-the-art operation that includes classrooms, labs and the support facilities necessary to operate a professional salon. Customers are accepted at certain times of the week to supply the hands-on experience required for licensing in Texas. The Center's computerized appointment system tracks customers and other salon management information, making the program the most comprehensive in Southeast Texas.
