Two staff members of the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Small Business Development Center recently garnered regional honors and cash prizes for their work in the past year.
SBDC administrative assistant Sandra Louis from Beaumont was the sole recipient of the Administrative Assistant “Staff Excellence” Award and a $1,000 check for her creative vision in expediting various business grants after Hurricane Rita devastated Southeast Texas.
“I nominated Sandra because she came to work with us just before the hurricane hit,” said Linda Tait, director of the Lamar State SBDC. “We were extremely overwhelmed and, although Sandra was just learning her job, she stepped right in and made progress charts, grant status forms and a filing system for the grant program. She always is very eager to make our jobs a little easier.”
Business consultant Kasey Taylor from Nederland received one of six “Impact Champion” Awards presented, and a check for $750 during the UH-SBDC regional meeting, which includes 16 small business centers covering 15 Southeast Texas counties.
Taylor was recognized for her role in creating jobs in Southeast Texas.
“Kasey has been one of our consultants for five years. She is very experienced in preparing loan packages for business plans because of her background in banking,” Tait said. “Kasey’s impact on the local economy has been significant. She also is very involved in area civic organizations.”
The Lamar State SBDC has won more awards than any other office in the region
since the awards were created two years ago, including an award given to Conrad Cooper for creating the most jobs in the region in 2006, Tait said.
Award winners are selected from the total numbers compiled by an independent survey administered to SBDC clients, who voluntarily submitted information on the number of jobs created, jobs retained, financial assistance received and an evaluation of the technical advice and training assistance they received from the SBDC office.
