Small Business Development Center
The Lamar State College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is an integral element of the College's mission of community service.
The SBDC provides small businesses with the practical assistance needed to survive, grow, and prosper. The SBDC works to support economic development in Port Arthur, Groves, Nederland, and Port Neches by providing counseling, training, and technical assistance to owners and managers of new and existing small businesses. The SBDC services are usually offered free of charge.
The SBDC opened its doors on February 17, 1998. The Center began with a staff of two and has grown to four. The facilities have been expanded to accommodate the growing needs of the local business community. The SBDC is looking forward to continuing to meet the needs of the local entrepreneur. The center works in association with Lamar State College - Port Arthur, the University of Houston, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The SBDC Staff offers free confidential consulting services customized to meet the requirements of each client. Each staff member has owned and operated a small business. All information regarding a client's business remains confidential. Counseling is offered on a variety of topics, including:
- Business plan preparation
- Sources of financing
- Personnel actions
The SBDC staff assists clients in securing conventional and SBA-guaranteed loans for their companies. Clients benefit from the long-term relationships the staff members have developed with area lenders. The SBDC also helps clients identify and pursue non-traditional sources of financing.
The SBDC participates in the Texas Information Procurement Services program (TIPS). Through this affiliation clients learn how to participate in bidding to provide goods and services to government agencies.
A component of the SBDC that reaches a wide variety of clients is training. Short courses specifically designed for small businesses are offered on the Lamar-Port Arthur campus. Most of the courses are offered as a free service. The training covers the practical skills and techniques needed for starting or managing your business. Call the SBDC office for the regularly updated schedule of classes. Check this website for future schedules (coming soon)
The International Trade Assistance Program serves to teach clients how to plan and market for the exporting of their product.
