10/23/2013 - “A Class Act” presents Neil Simon’s “Rumors”

There is a rumor going around Port Arthur and Lamar State College-Port Arthur that audiences will be rolling in the aisles at the production of Neil Simon’s “Rumors.”

A four-day run of the show, presented by drama club “A Class Act,” will open on Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Black Box Theater in the Performing Arts Center, located at 1500 Procter Street in Port Arthur. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and $5 for children. Students, faculty and staff of Lamar State College-Port Arthur are admitted free. To reserve tickets, call 409-984-6111.

In this slapstick farce, upper class New York couples arrive at the home of Deputy Mayor Charlie Brock and his wife Myra to attend their 10th wedding anniversary dinner party. It isn’t much of a party since there is no food, except for a bag of pretzels. But that is the least of their worries since the host, hostess, and even the servants are missing from the party. Ken Gorman, a lawyer, first discovers that Charlie has shot himself with a gun through the earlobe in a failed suicide attempt. For fear of how the media and police would react, Ken and his lawyer wife Chris Gorman, and eventually the other couples, do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events. Comedy arises when one lie-filled rumor leads to another in this outrageous game of telephone tag where small misconceptions wind up making a huge difference.

Clark Reed, assistant technical director at LSC-PA, makes his directorial debut with “Rumors.” He will benefit from a veteran cast whose exuberance plays perfectly with the farcical nature of the show.

“The student actors in my cast have such a willingness to learn, to grow, and to be the best they can be,” Clark said. “I always say that our goal is to have a show done as well as it can be done, and the cast has bought in and work diligently to create the best show. That is the most rewarding part for me, watching the lights come on in the students’ minds and watching them fully express their talents.”

Members of the cast include Hunter Hodges, Alexa Gilbeau and Kelsey Strother, all of Orange, Carlton James of Port Arthur, Christina Gengo and Nick Bishop of Port Neches, Richard Lopez and Breana Landry of Nederland, Pamela Hudgens of Vidor and Dylan Kilday of Silsbee.

“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to direct a show here at LSC-PA,” said Reed, a native of Snyder, Texas. “We have fantastic facilities, amazingly talented students and awesome support from the administration, faculty, and staff. This makes my job directing much easier and such a pleasure to experience.”
