    Entries sought for 2019 Expressions literary magazine

    The Call for Entries has opened for the 2019 edition of Lamar State College Port Arthur’s “Expressions” literary magazine.

    The annual contest is open to the College’s students, faculty, staff and alumni. Prize awards in 10 different categories will be presented to students only with first place taking $50, second place $30 and third place $15.

    Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, December 11, 2018.

    Categories include Poetry, Essay, Short Story, Literary Critique, General Art, Cover Art, Digital Art, Photography, Book Review and Special Essay. The Special Essay category is sponsored by academic honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

    Special rules regarding the contest and categories include:

    • Those who placed in the top three in the 2018 edition of Expressions are not eligible to win in that same category in 2019. Winners from 2018 are eligible to win prizes in other categories. The Special Essay category is exempt from this rule.

    • Art work is limited to pen or pencil line drawing and must be no larger than 8.5 inches-by-10 inches with a one-inch border. The drawing must be vertical in orientation. Cover Art must contain the magazine’s name and year.

    • Photographs must be black and white, no larger than 8x10 and oriented vertically.

    • Literary entries must be typed, formatted in Microsoft Word with one-inch borders. Font must be Calibri, 14 point, with 1.5 spacing on 8.5x11 white paper. The category must be typed at the top of the page. Entrants must attach a separate piece of paper to their entry with name, address, phone, student ID and degree major.

    • All entries must be submitted in two ways: A physical copy must be dropped in Expressions Sponsor Caitlin James’ mailbox, located in the center hallway of the Madison Monroe Education Building. Another copy must also be sent via email as an attachment to jamescr1@lamarpa.edu with author’s name and title of entry. A confirmation e-mail reply will be sent back to origin of email.

    • Enter as many categories as you like but no more than two entries will be accepted in a single category.

    • Short stories and essays may not exceed 1,500 words. Poems may not exceed 100 lines. There is no minimum length for any entry. A special reception will take place during the Spring 2019 semester.

    The date and location of that event will be announced at a later date.
