Maurice Abelman Receives 2026 Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) is proud to announce that Maurice Abelman, Coordinator of Graphic Design and a tenured instructor, has been named a 2026 Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award recipient.
Abelman was recognized during an awards ceremony held Wednesday, October 7, at the Reaud Honors Building on the Lamar University campus. Abelman was celebrated alongside recipients from Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology and Lamar State College Orange.
Established in 1979, the Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award recognizes faculty and staff members making significant contributions through community service in the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Texas.
Abelman’s recognition reflects his commitment to using art, design, and education to make a positive impact throughout Southeast Texas. A multidisciplinary artist, muralist, educator and graphic designer, Abelman has painted more than 60 large-scale murals across the region, transforming public spaces into visual landmarks that celebrate culture, history and identity.
At LSCPA, Abelman serves as Coordinator of Graphic Design, where he combines his professional experience with his passion for educating and mentoring the next generation of creatives. Through instruction in areas such as branding, digital imaging and experiential design, he helps students develop strong conceptual thinking while preparing them for careers in an evolving creative industry. His most recent work with students is a 77-foot wide, 9-foot tall contemporary mural in Central Mall showcasing Port Arthur’s own Janis Joplin.
His professional work also includes branding, logo development, advertising campaigns, packaging design, environmental graphics and murals. His approach centers on creating meaningful visual experiences that connect with audiences while serving a practical purpose.
Through his public art, professional work, and dedication to students, he continues to contribute to the cultural landscape of Southeast Texas while encouraging others to find their own creative voice.
