PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Lamar State College Port Arthur has been awarded a $141,907 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant through the Texas Workforce Commission to support career and technical education and expand opportunities for students pursuing careers in welding.

The grant is among 84 JET grants totaling more than $20 million announced by Governor Greg Abbott on October 12, 2026. Statewide, the grants are expected to help train more than 7,400 students during the first year through investments in equipment for career and technical education programs.

LSCPA’s grant will support training for 10 students preparing for careers as welders, helping strengthen access to hands-on workforce education in Southeast Texas. Through career-focused instruction and practical training, students can develop the technical skills needed to pursue opportunities in the skilled trades.

The JET program, administered by the Texas Workforce Commission, helps eligible educational institutions purchase and install equipment needed to establish or expand career and technical education programs that prepare students for high-demand occupations.

This investment reflects LSCPA’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and to preparing students with the skills and experience employers need. By expanding access to technical training, the college continues to support regional industry and contribute to the future of Southeast Texas’s workforce.
