Communication Access

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing are provided with communication access, so they can understand, participate and learn the material presented.  Students who are deaf or hard of hearing may prefer communicating through sign language, rather than lip reading or if the student has residual hearing, using a device to amplify sound.  Sign language interpreting services are arranged through the ODS and are reasonable accommodations for courses, tutoring, meeting with an advisor or instructor and events sponsored by LSCPA. 

A sign language interpreter is a trained professional who facilitates communication, including both signed and auditory communication so both deaf and hearing individuals can fully interact.  Interpreters follow a code of ethics and all communication interpreted is confidential.  Interpreters are to convey the content and spirit of the speaker and should not add or delete any information at any time.  The interpreter’s role is to facilitate communication and should not be asked to give his/her opinion or perform tasks other than interpreting. 

Students should make the ODS Coordinator aware of the request for a sign language interpreter at least three (3) weeks before the beginning of the semester or the event the student is planning to attend so arrangements can be made.  If a student is unable to contact the ODS Coordinator 3 weeks before the class or event, then the student should contact the ODS as soon as possible to ensure adequate time to arrange interpreting services.  Requests for other forms of communication access, such as computer assisted real-time transcription (CART) services must be made at least six (6) weeks before the beginning of the semester for arrangements to be made and services to be in place at the beginning of the semester.
