Focus & Goals

Throughout the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012, the QEP Development Committee revised the QEP focus statement, goals, and outcomes, tightening and refining each statement as needed. By the end of the spring 2012 semester, the focus statement read:
 

Focus

The focus of Lamar State College-Port Arthur’s Quality Enhancement Plan is to enhance student reading comprehension, literacy skills, and appreciation of reading by introducing a variety of reading strategies into select credit courses, and by providing reading-focused activities on campus.
 

Goals

Classroom Level Initiative Goal

To improve reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition, by integrating instruction designed to improve the students’ ability to select and use appropriate reading and vocabulary strategies into select credit courses.

In support of the classroom goal, in the spring 2012 semester, the Committee selected six highly regarded reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition strategies to use in select reading-intensive classes:
  • SQ3R,
  • KWL,
  • Selective Underlining/Annotation,
  • Concept Definition Maps,
  • Content/Context Clues, and
  • Quizlet.

Institutional Initiative Goal

To foster an environment that is conducive to reading, by providing
  • Support for instructional intervention
  • Programming that emphasizes reading, and
  • Training for faculty and staff
In support of the institutional initiative, the Committee agreed to the following activities:
  • Integrate effective, research-based strategies for improving reading comprehension, literacy skills, and appreciation into all classes.
  • Provide an open-access website on which will be housed links to reading websites, links to locally-developed videos or other reading tutorials, information about upcoming reading-related events at the college and in the community, and feature coverage of faculty, staff, and student reading.
  • Offer a common book experience in the fall semesters and a common theme with readings in the spring semesters.
  • Expand the role of assessment coordinator to include faculty development

Expected Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will comprehend discipline-specific academic reading material.
  • Students will use appropriate and discipline-specific vocabulary.
  • Students will gain reading and vocabulary acquisition strategies.

Institutional Outcomes

  • The faculty will incorporate specific strategies for teaching reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition into their instructional material.
  • The institution will foster an atmosphere conducive to the reading of a variety of genres and types of material, regardless of media, for both collegiate achievement and personal enrichment.

Seahawks SOAR, is to improve students’ reading comprehension skills by integrating reading strategies into targeted courses, and by supporting reading-focused activities.
