Roger Turcios Jr., an outreach coordinator in Lamar State College Port Arthur’s Title V Program, has been selected as the Rising Star Award winner by the Hispanic Proactive Coalition.

Turcios, a graduate of Port Arthur ISD’s Woodrow Wilson Early College High School program has worked for LSCPA since 2020 as a mentor to students who are following his same path.

“I’m very enthusiastic about education and mentoring students,” he said. “It’s critical that we support underserved communities so they can find their path to academic and individual excellence.”

With that goal in focus, Turcios has established outreach and engagement initiatives in Southeast Texas, which has helped the program connect community individuals and organizations with LSCPA’s student population.

He oversees LSCPA’s mentorship program in collaboration with Woodrow Wilson ECHS, which allows upperclassmen to advise and mentor freshman students in their academic journey. He also is a sponsor for the Young Men of Excellence group, a young male mentoring program in collaboration with Bob Home ECHS that focuses on introducing students to a wide range of community leaders and enhancing social and professional skills required for real world success.

Recently, Turcios partnered with the Texas Education Agency’s Multilingual Council to boost the state’s efforts to promote and connect multilingual families, schools, and communities.

Turcios received his associate degree from LSCPA as a 17 year old and is pursuing a second undergraduate degree in corporate communication with the goal of becoming a public relations director.

He will receive his Rising Star Award during a special ceremony on September 15 in Port Neches. The HPAC is an organization dedicated to supporting the empowerment of the Hispanic community in Southeast Texas.
