“From Risk to Results: Periodontal Instrumentation”… (3CEU’s, 9:00AM – 12:00PM)

This course is based on current scientific literature and will provide the clinician evidence based tools and strategies for comprehensive patient care. The Evidence-based Decision Making (EBDM) process will be discussed with regard to periodontal risk assessment protocols, salivary diagnostics, and progressive treatment planning. Advantages of ultrasonic instrumentation will be examined as demonstrated in the current research for obtaining successful clinical outcomes while providing comprehensive patient care.

  • Examine the application of Evidence-based Decision Making (EBDM) for providing patient outcomes by utilizing current concepts in periodontal debridement
  • Understand the unique relationship between oral and systemic conditions utilizing the patient’s risk factors including current medical status, dental & periodontal considerations, and total patient history.
  • Discuss the use of salivary diagnostics as part of risk assessment to examine the presence of pathogenic bacteria, genetic markers, and elevated C-reactive protein which all play a role in periodontal disease susceptibility.
  • Develop an understanding of the role ultrasonic instrumentation plays in biofilm disruption, access to deeper periodontal pockets and furcation involvement critical for successful clinical outcomes.
  • Recognize the need for a variety of ultrasonic inserts according to patient presentation and clinical significance.
  • Identify the elements of insert care and maintenance necessary for effective and efficient clinical outcomes.

“A Beam of Light into your Practice: Benefits of Lasers in Everyday Dental Hygiene”… (3CEU’s 1:00PM – 4:00PM)

This course is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding of laser use in dentistry today. The science technology, and current applications will be presented to maximize the comfort level of use. Implementing dental lasers into your armamentarium can aid in effectively managing the oral health care needs of patients while providing optimum and optional treatment modalities.

  • Describe the basic science, physics and fundamentals of lasers
  • Explain basic laser terminology
  • Discuss the clinical applications of lasers in dentistry
  • Summarize tissue interactions of lasers
  • Demonstrate laser safety and appropriate infection prevention protocols when using lasers
