September is recognized nationwide as Workforce Development Month, a time to highlight the partnerships, programs, and people who are strengthening communities through education and career opportunities. Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) marked the occasion by celebrating the success of 47 individuals who graduated in August with a Level 1 Welding Certification through the Partners for Reentry Opportunities in Workforce Development (PROWD) program.
The welding instruction, provided by LSCPA’s expert faculty, was conducted through five training cohorts at the Federal Corrections Institute (FCI) in Beaumont. The certifications represent more than technical skills—they symbolize opportunity, growth, and the chance for a fresh start. Upon reentering the workforce, graduates will have the training they need to pursue stable careers in an in-demand field.
“This program is an incredible example of how education can transform lives,” said Dr. Betty Reynard, President of Lamar State College Port Arthur. “By providing accessible, high-quality training, we are opening doors to new opportunities for individuals and strengthening the Southeast Texas workforce at the same time.”
The PROWD program is specifically designed to support justice-involved individuals by connecting them with the skills and resources that improve employability. LSCPA partnered with Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas to ensure that participants received the training necessary to compete in today’s labor market.
“Our welding graduates are stepping back into the community with a credential that employers recognize and need,” said Dr. Ben Stafford, Vice President of Workforce Training and Continuing Education at Lamar State College Port Arthur. “This collaboration demonstrates what’s possible when education and workforce partners align around real industry demand. We’re proud of our faculty, proud of our students, and committed to scaling programs that create second chances and family-sustaining careers.”
As LSCPA joins the nationwide celebration of Workforce Development Month, the College remains committed to creating second chances, empowering individuals, and preparing a more skilled regional workforce for Southeast Texas.
